What method did you use to install WordPress? Because the standard, “Famous 5-Minute Install” specifically asks you about this preference when you set it up. See the first screenshot here, “Allow my blog to appear in search engines like Google and Technorati”:

Perhaps an automatic install tool bypasses that option and defaults to a private blog.

Hey Chris! Dang, you’re a smart guy. I am using some automatic install tools and that’s probably the problem. I should stick with the Famous 5-minute. Maybe you can do a guest blog on steps for efficient WordPress install?

This is how I learned to install WordPress in the first place. It’s a bit old, (still using WordPress 2.5,) but the information is still relevant and the steps are still the same.
