John was recently not happy with Facebook page merging process

After accepting an offer from Facebook to merge my business page (9 Clouds) to a places page I waited for days and then a couple weeks. Finally when I got the memo that my pages were merging I stumbled on quite the surprise when I when to check out 9 Clouds on Facebook… all of my content was gone. Eighteen months of posts, questions, pictures and videos completely erased.

I still have not found a solution, but I did hear some some similar stories and a bit more clarification on this Facebook page of frustrated peers.

This Idea is: CHILLY

Facebook Adds Feed Filtering

Facebook adds new filtering options to your feed. Read John's thoughts on this idea below.

Today Facebook starting rolling our filtering options to your news feed. A couple initial thoughts.

Great for Users - This will be a much welcomed feature for Facebook users. Now you can decided what you want to view in your news feed as opposed to the old options of Top News (which was determined by Facebook’s algorithm for you) or Recent News (which was simply based on timeline). The option to view just photos, only links, only posts from pages, or even a specific group of friends is great. Not only will this make Facebook more enjoyable, but also more manageable.

Good or Bad for Brands? - For brands and marketers like myself this is a bit of a double-edge sword. My initial thought is users will want to filter out the brands they “like” and ignore their status updates. On the other hand, if a user is filtering only links, only photos, or only videos your brand may be able to get in front of the users easier. If you’re running an effective Facebook page with engaging content the feed filtering may give you a higher chance of being seen.

This all comes down to how users will take advantage of the filtering options. Many users will probably keep their filtering options as status quo. What will you do?

Before we make a final conclusion we’ll have to wait and see if this feature even remains. Filtering is currently not turned on for everyone on Facebook and Mashable admits that it could be that Facebook is merely testing the feature.

In the end, if this features sticks it is better for the users and thus it is a HOT IDEA.

This Idea Is: HOT

I’m in L.A. to wrap up Pick My NHL Team.com. After meeting so many people I started thinking about how do you maintain your network? Here are two of my favorite tips.

1. Birthday Wishes on Facebook – It only takes you 10 seconds to write a customized Facebook message to your friends on their birthday. Let them know you’re thinking about them and maintain that connection.

2. Sort a “Connect With” Tweetdeck Column – Create a filtered column of 10-15 people that you want to get to know better and keep in touch with in 2010. Make that time investment in these people and reach out to them on Twitter at least once every two weeks.
